As the search continues, Cardozo’s Office of Career Services (OCS) is still without a permanent Dean of Career Services. Administration now aims to have the new dean in place by the start of the Spring 2012 semester.
After current Dean Arthur Fama announced his intention to retire in May, administration initially hoped to install a new dean by the beginning of the fall semester. As the Jurist first reported in September, the law school did not hire a candidate over the summer. In late August, when it became clear that a new administrator would not be hired by the semester’s start, Fama agreed to stay at OCS’s helm for an additional month.
Now Fama has agreed to stay at Cardozo through November. “We have been working closely with Dean Fama and his team to ensure a smooth transition, with the knowledge that finding the right fit takes time and serious consideration,” said Vice Dean and Professor of Law Edward Stein. “This is an important position for the school and our students, and finding the right person takes time.”
Dean Stein and Amy Sugin, Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Programs, are chairing the search committee of faculty and administrators charged with hiring the new dean. After receiving more than 100 applications for the position over the summer, the committee has identified candidates to invite to Cardozo for interviews. The committee is comprised of faculty, administrators, alumni and students. Students being consulted include representatives from the Student Bar Association (SBA).
Dean Stein expressed hope that the search process might be nearing its end. “We have at least one strong candidate presently under consideration and others still in the pipeline.”
