At 1:53 PM on Tuesday August 23, a 5.9 magnitude hit central Virginia. The earthquake was felt across the east coast. Some buildings in NYC were immediately evacuated.
Many students were already back at Cardozo– for journal work week, summer classes, or 1L orientation. The school sent an email at 2:24 PM assuring all students that “there is no cause for alarm. Our building is fine.” The email further advised:
“If we experience another one, I ask that you remain calm, do not panic, REMAIN WHERE YOU ARE and take shelter. If you are indoors, stay there, take immediate shelter under your desk, a table, in public lobbies or exit stairwells. Stay away from windows, outside doors, large bookshelves or fixtures, etc.
An additional email, sent to the entire YU community, with the subject line “whole lot of shakin’ goin’ on!,” explained:
“Although feeling “the earth move” was disconcerting to many of us, I can report that all campus buildings were checked and found to be unaffected by the tremors. We were also in contact with the appropriate NYC and NYS agencies during this episode for their guidance and accordingly we did not conduct building evacuations needlessly.”
