Welcome Back to School! It's Closing at 4:00 p.m.

I remember when I was in college and the first day of classes was an optional, social meeting. No one had textbooks until school was already in its second or third week and many of us neglected to purchase books until finals. Alas, we arrived at law school, a vicious and unique animal. It is where people complete an assignment even before the first day–not least of all out of fear of being “emsocratized/em” [sic]. There is so much work one must do just to keep up, and then there is the work to find work (the paying kind). To alleviate this stress Cardozo has unique social aspects that rival any other school.

First of all, we have a great lounge, thanks to Kathy O. Greenberg, for all students to meet, greet and relax. Then there are all the clubs who create a plethora of programming to sustain each person’s curiosities and social needs. After school begins, signs start to appear and fill bulletin boards all over school. The Jewish Law Students Association (“JLSA”) will again be one of those vying for your attention.

This year, the theme for JLSA programming is “The Basics of Jewish Identity and Culture.” We spent this past summer teaming up with other Jewish organizations and hope you will join us for many interesting events that will explore topics central to Jewish culture. One of our first events will be an interactive session about the High Holidays, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Some people have heard of these days before or have even celebrated them, but many don’t really know much about them. Have you ever wondered why we have two sets of them, or why the school needs to be closed? Stay tuned to find out more about this event. For those whose curiosity is not satisfied with one presentation, we will also have lunch and learn sessions that will provide a chance to find out more details and ask more questions. Of course, we will also have social meetings and more details about all our events will be forthcoming.

As always, JLSA is available for all students, not just Jewish students. Students who have concerns they would like to present to the administration can use JLSA as a liaison. We can also provide information to help you answer many questions you may have about Judaism, School or anything else you would like to ask. Feel free to contact us at any time at a href=”mailto:cardozojlsa@gmail.com”cardozojlsa@gmail.com/a. You will also be able to find us at this year’s club fair. We encourage all students to sign up for JLSA’s email list to get more details about our upcoming programming and more. Have a great year, GOOD LUCK!

Sincerely,

JLSA 2009 – 2010
