“Witness the whiteness…” commanded Taylor Shann, 2L and a director of Law Revue 2009, as he called his players to action. A familiar melody began as three actors took the front of the rehearsal-space classroom, confident and aware of their lack of elegance, straddling the uneasiness between chest voice and falsetto. Song and dance ensued.
Parody. A topical, familiar, and comedic mishmash. It brings us together while putting into perspective the many contexts of our lives. And Law Revue is the epitome of parodying our existences in the context of the institution to which we belong. It is visual and aural proof that there is something tangible binding the students at Cardozo who, as experience shows, may at times seem inapproachable and distant.
“[Law Revue] is a celebration and a satire of all things Cardozo….You can make your point better with a joke than with a pointed critique,” Shann said.
While some of the humor recurs year after year (think goy jokes and Brickman spoofs), the players take pride in reflecting current sentiment (economy, corporate scandal, and unemployment).
This year’s show will be faster and better than previous years, boasts director Whitney Meers, 3L. The players have been practicing four nights a week since mid-February to meet the high demands of the directors and the Law Revue ad campaign: “Shorter, funnier, more beer-er.”
“This one is shorter, and a little tighter!” Meers said. And the players, while participating for various reasons, are just as excited.
“Taylor Shann convinced me it would be a really good time and I thought I’d give it a try,” said 2L Kerry Anne Hoffman with a coy smile.
Professional music director Steve Potfora of Radio City Music Hall has also been the music director of Law Revue for over 13 years, since Jeff Marx, CSL ‘96, of Avenue Q fame, brought him on board.
“Don’t be afraid to play with them and sing near their butts,” an enthused Potfora said while coaching Meers during one of her sketches.
Law Revue will take place on Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26 at 8 p.m. in the third floor lounge. With 15 players, three directors, one choreographer, a veteran music director, and five kinds of beer, Law Revue will undoubtedly be a show not to miss. While I have been all but sworn to secrecy regarding the details of the show, to sum up what to expect: “That’s what she said.”
